I did not dream of my wedding when I was a little girl.
I did not dream of my wedding when I was a little girl. Sometimes I dreamed of what qualities a man would have to possess in order for me to commit to him for life, and once that was established, sometimes I dreamed of him, but not our wedding. When I was exploring the world of fashion design, sometimes I drew dresses that made me think, “Hm. I could wear that even for a wedding.” But I didn’t dream of the wedding itself. I was not holding my breath waiting to be proposed to, I was not waiting for this my entire life. I had never looked at a single bridal website until after I was engaged. I have had to figure out what I want for this wedding from scratch since the engagement. Things do not need to be flawless, I am not trying to realize the details of a long-held dream I started working on years ago. I am not entitled to throw fits because I am getting married.
And you know what? You’re not entitled to, either. Even if you have been dreaming about this since you were a little girl.
A wedding invitation is one of the most noticeable components of a wedding from the outside looking in. Even those invited guests who won’t be able to attend your celebration will get a feel for the spirit of your wedding through the invitation they receive in the mail.
Since Ben and I are both musicians and some of our best friends in the world are artists, we decided to go the route of an 11 by 17 poster instead of the traditional wedding invitation. We worked with a good friend of ours, Tavet Gillson, on the design for this poster. It took a few tries to get it just right, but when all was said and done, Tavet represented our vision perfectly in this design.
Our vision was a little blurry at first, but we knew we wanted something with a giant tree and a night sky since we’ll be getting married in the middle of the woods at a lovely cabin property called Austin Heaven at sunset and celebrating through the night. We simultaneously wanted the daytime to be represented (which it was in the clouds) to symbolize the fact that our wedding celebration will continue from day to night to day (repeat) since we’re having a multi-day wedding. And, of course, we wanted to achieve the music poster feel at the end of it all. I think we did.
Our dear friend, Katie, printed the posters for us at a print shop in Brooklyn, New York and sent them to us in the mail. The compliments have been pouring in since we sent out our invitations and I couldn’t be happier that we went the non-traditional, bohemian wedding route on this one.
